President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed citizens late on Thursday via teleconference.

“IF THEY HAVE TANKS, MY NATION HAS FAITH”

Stressing that the nation won the fight for democracy, President Erdoğan said: “This is not an ordinary incident. This is similar to winning the war of independence again. Those who have undertaken these treacherous attacks by wearing our soldiers’ uniforms and abusing the Turkish Armed Forces for their own evil purposes will pay a heavy price. They have already started to pay that price.”

“STATE OF EMERGENCY IS NOT A MARTIAL LAW”

Recalling the meeting of National Security Council and the meeting of the Council of Ministers, both held under the chairmanship of the President on the same day at the Presidential Complex, President Erdoğan said: “In line with the decision reached at the meeting of the National Security Council, we submitted the government a recommendation of historic importance. Following the NSC meeting, we held the meeting of the Council of Ministers, which passed the state of emergency recommendation as a decree. Now there might emerge many speculations. State of emergency is not a martial law. It is aimed at cleansing all our state institutions of members of the Gulenist Terrorist Organization and all other terrorist organizations. It is a process by which governors will have a stronger rule. In provinces, the Turkish Armed Forces will be under the command of governors.”

“RESTRICTIONS ON FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS ARE OUT OF QUESTION”

Ruling out any restriction on civil liberties, President Erdoğan stressed: “Any restriction on fundamental rights and freedoms will be out of question during the state of emergency process. There is no such thing. We are the guarantor of this. My people will have much greater peace and security. They will walk to bright futures with decisive steps. There might emerge many speculators. Don’t let these speculations deceive you. A three-month state of emergency has been declared. The state of emergency by no means targets the economic activities of citizens. The prime minister and the government will make necessary statements. We will also continue to inform you.”

“WE BELIEVE THEY WILL SEND HIM BACK TO TURKEY”

Noting that Turkey requested FETO leader Fetullah Gülen’s extradition from the U.S., President Erdoğan said: “Of course we expect our friends and strategic partners to hand over this terrorist leader to us. This is our most basic right. We believe they will send him back to Turkey. There are also those who have escaped or try to escape from our country. As I have always said, we will continue to enter their caves. No matter where they flee, we are after them. We will find them and our nation will be a witness to it.”
