“Turkey puts up an important fight worldwide against FETO”
During the conference taking place at the Presidential Complex, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Mustafa Akıncı made statements concerning the scope and theme of their meeting.
Commencing his address by expressing his gratitude for receiving TRNC President Akıncı and his accompanying delegation, President Erdoğan extended his thanks to the Turkish Cypriots for acting in support of and in solidarity with Turkey against the July 15 coup attempt.
“WE WILL NEVER FORGET OUR FRIENDS SIDING WITH US”
Referring to the Democracy Rally in Nicosia held on August 5 with mass participation, President Erdoğan stated that Turkish Cypriots demonstrated that they are Turkey’s true friends and he also added: “Without any doubt, we have never forgotten and will never forget our friends siding with Turkey.”
Underscoring that Turkey puts up an important fight worldwide against Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the President said: “We know that TRNC sides with us in our fight against FETO. On July 21, the group was recognized as a terrorist organization by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through cabinet decree. From now on, FETO and its extensions will not be able to find a way to live in the TRNC. We hope this attitude will be seen as an example by other friendly countries.”
“TURKEY AND TRNC WANT A PERMANENT AND COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION”
President Erdoğan stated that during narrow-scoped inter-delegation meetings with TRNC President Akıncı, they addressed the current state of the ongoing negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus question and assessed the issue in detail and he added: “Turkey and Turkish Cypriot side want a permanent, fair and comprehensive solution. We have exerted and continue to exert every effort in this respect. The objective of these efforts is to establish a new viable bi-zonal and bi-communal partnership between the two equal parties on the island this year within the frame of UN parameters. It is necessary to resolve the Cyprus question in a way ensuring political equality, legitimate rights and security of the Turkish Cypriot side. The settlement of this issue will contribute to the security, stability, cooperation and prosperity of our region. After the prospective solution, the true potential of Cyprus Island will be manifested, various cooperation projects which have not been utilized so far in regional scale will be put into practice.”
Underlining the significance of political understanding and flexibility on the way to the solution, President Erdoğan stated that it is necessary for the two parties to see each other as future partners and to demonstrate their willingness to co-exist respecting each other’s rights. The President also said: “If finding a solution is sincerely desired, what is natural and reasonable is to exhibit this attitude in a tangible manner from now on.”
“We will continue to do our part unwaveringly to establish peace, stability and prosperity on the Island and in the region,” President Erdoğan added, emphasizing that these meetings are important steps taken in that direction.
TRNC PRESIDENT AKINICI: “A TURNING POINT IS REACHED CONCERNING CYPRUS”
Stating that during the July 15 coup attempt, the call under the leadership of President Erdoğan triggered the patriotism of Turkish people, President Akıncı of TRNC said that tens of thousands of people shielded with their bodies against the tanks and coup plotters. Recalling that Grand National Assembly of Turkey convened in the presence of a group of deputies under such circumstances, President Akıncı stated: “This is a legend, a saga that is to be written in gold letters in the history of this nation. I hope that the people who proved worthy of democracy continue to live under a democratic constitutional state without having to come face to face with these threats ever again and achieve better objectives.”
Remarking that the assessment meeting was highly beneficial for the future of TRNC, President Akıncı affirmed that close consultation will continue during the following process. Underlining that a turning point is reached concerning Cyprus, President Akıncı stated: “Either we will find a solution in Cyprus by the end of 2016, or this window of opportunity will disappear as the propaganda process for the elections to be held in February 2018 in the south begins in 2017.”
